Following an open call for proposals, 15 artists and creative practitioners were invited to the PS² project space for 4-5 day long residencies. Used as a workspace, showroom, exhibition-performance-research or dream-space, the set-up changed in a fast turnaround, showcasing many creative positions. Each residency was open to the public- at least at some stage- if the resident artist wished.
From 28 May-02 June 2022 I used the space to investigate and study the visual notation of origami crease patterns.
During my time I researched the following:
• History of origami
• Mathematical principles of crease patterns (including Maekawa’s theory)
• How to read crease patterns
• How to fold paper into objects and shapes
• Explore ways to print both the crease pattern imagery and the folded objects
Having the time and feedback led me to quickly start to build three dimensional objects and scale them. The repetition of tessellation folds, and the square base, the foundational fold for so many became my focus as the days continued on.
I had a fantastic 5 days during my #shortresidency @pssquaredbelfast. A big thank you for the time to learn new skills and explore in such a lovely space.
